WE GOT PROMOTED!!!

Well November started with a big bang!  We were off and running.  We had many Scentsy parties booked, met some really awesome people and had some Christmas Markets booked.  Matt and I were busy busy busy - but LOVING every minute of it!

In November we were officially promoted to Super Star Consultants, our team grew to be a group of 9.  #doubleyay !!! We are pleasantly surprised at how quickly things are moving.  I never even imagined that when I signed up to be a Scentsy Consultant in 2011 that I had even a glimmer of a chance to make any type of profit.  It really started out as a fun hobby and it definitely has been that - but MORE!

This month alone we made enough for 2 car payments and an insurance payment.  Guess what???? it's November 28th and there is still 2 more days left in this month and I haven't even finished entering in my orders yet!

Our dreams are quickly becoming a reality.  I was told by my sponsor that the Incentive Trip is very easily achievable.  When she told me that I kinda thought to myself "Yah right for you maybe". ...... but now I totally see what she meant.  It's very realistic and it has been so much fun!  I've had a blast!  And I'm still going for it!  I plan to make Director very soon and to earn the Incentive Trip.  Do you think I'll make it???

STAY TUNED!!!

Top 10 Ways to Ruin a Job Interview

Every single person the world over will have his or her own compendium of excuses when it comes to why exactly they failed to bag the job following an interview, though suffice to say it is always somebody or something else’s fault. Not true of course as the only person ever standing in the way of untold success is you yourself, though it is surprisingly simply to blow and interview in its entirety by making what could be described as minor slip ups. With the in mind, the following brings together 10 of the best/worst ways to blow a whole interview, in most cases without even knowing it:

10 Too early or late Most will of course know that arriving to an interview too late is never a good idea to say the very least, for obvious reasons that require no explanation. On the other hand, trying to show eagerness by arriving incredibly early can in fact have an equally detrimental effect on your chances. Indeed, not only will it likely be interpreted that you have no realistic ability of keeping to a sensible timeframe, but it is also never a good idea to let your potential employer believe you have far too much free time on your hands…even if you do!

9 Career path clashes We are all told to be ambitious and talk confidently about where we would like to see ourselves in the future, though if this happens to be in a bigger, better place above and beyond the realms of this particular post, it may be best to hold back a little. No employer wants to feel they are a stepping stone in your much more grandiose plan, therefore be careful not to flag up clashes of interest.

8 Cracking jokes Actually, this is something that can either make or break an interview as the ideally suited joke that really hits the nail on the head could make all the difference in the world. Sadly, this is the case in about one out of every thousands attempts with the rest breeding the most awkward and hideous aftermath most could possibly imagine. As such, unless you really want to roll the dice and hope you don’t fall in with the other 99.9%, keep your jokes to yourself.

7 Sucking up There is something of a fine line between respect and proverbial brown-nosing at a rather sickening level, which far too many will find themselves crossing without realizing it. As a rule of thumb, avoid compliments to anything other than your basic first impressions of the business as a whole. Indeed, even if you do find the interviewer’s tie a quite stunning example of a renaissance mosaic interpretation, you will only creep him out by telling him this.

6 Insulting old bosses This is a hugely overused tactic in millions of cases every day and can land you in more trouble that it is possibly worth. Of course, on the surface it seems entirely reasonable and perhaps even beneficial to call your old boss every name under the sun and criticize their running of the business as a whole, thus showing your motivation to move on to bigger and better things, right? Wrong, as all this shows is a lack of loyalty and respect that will instantly discourage your new boss from taking you on, as how can they possibly know that you won’t speak the same way about them simply for kudos?

5 Acting like God’s gift Of course you think you are the ideally suited person for the job and indeed you want the interviewer to believe there are none better, but crossing the line into showing off and arrogance will pretty much bring about nothing other than a swift end to the interview, not to mention your chances. Nerves and concern are attractive traits as they show thought and care – arrogance displays a potentially careless attitude that no company the world over would find appealing.

4 Dressing for the beach
Despite the fact that the business in question markets Hawaiian shirt or perhaps the latest line in flip-flops, this does not mean that you should turn up for the interview looking like you’ve just strolled in randomly from the streets. True, in many cases you don’t have to go overboard, but the number of times candidates blow their chances before even saying a word by turning up in shorts is staggering, not to mention rather tragic.

 3 Dressing for a funeral
On the flipside to the above example, depending on the particular position in question you may find that taking your appearance far too seriously can count you out of the running to an equal extent. If all you own is the funeral suit you picked up a decade or two ago from a charity shop, consider upgrading to something a little more appropriate, even casual if the situation calls for it.

 2 Rehearsing answers
Always guaranteed to see so many interviewers the world over cringe as if hearing fingernails dragging down a blackboard, rehearsing answers down to the letter is simply the worst possible way of expecting a good result when posed important questions. Think about it…if you’ve found all of your answers on the good-old internet then it stands to reason that so will millions of others before you. Showing this level of predictability and lack of creativity will see the application in the trash before it even had a chance to get off the ground.

1 Stupid closing questions
The interview has been productive, pleasantries exchanged and expectations are high, so there really is nothing to worry about in the very final moments, right? Wrong, as the questions you choose to ask the interviewer have every potential to blow all positive impressions made so far. For example, ‘I won’t have to work overtime will I?’ or ‘what if I need an extended vacation?’ or ‘Well it doesn’t seem nearly as bad a job as I expected!’ will likely make this the first and last encounter you have with this particular company, undoing every effort made up until this moment and labeling you for life as a bona-fide fool.

Improving Workplace Mental Health

A really interesting and informative article provided by Standard Life. This is really good information to know on how to help your staff and watch for the signals that your staff need help.

Improving workplace mental health

Considering individual and organizational factors in a comprehensive and integrated approach to prevention

In this document
What can we learn from the SALVEO Study, the most important research study conducted in Canada on factors that contribute to the incidence of major mental health disorders?
• What is the impact on mental health disorders of external factors to the workplace, as opposed to occupational factors?
• What can employers do to control mental health disorders among their employees and limit the personal and financial consequences?
• How to take effective action to deal with workplace-specific factors.
• What are the most effective management practices to promote a healthy work environment?

Employers do not control all factors determining mental health.

For many Canadians, the workplace stimulates self-development and self-realization. It is an environment that contributes to personal well-being and nurtures healthy self-esteem and work-life balance.

The workplace, however, is often seen as a source of substantial stress; one that contributes to the incidence of mental health disorders, such as psychological distress, depression or burnout. Mental health problems affect nearly a quarter of Canadian workers. Adults at the beginning and at the peak of their careers are the most severely affected by them.

It is standard practice for employers to try and limit the incidence of mental health problems among employees. Preventive measures may include a review of management practices and the implementation of a health and wellness program.

How can we distinguish between the impact of determining factors employers can control (management policies, support program, workload) and the impact of factors beyond their control (family life, personal problems, individual traits)?

The SALVEO Study recently conducted with the support of Standard Life provides some answers. It highlights the importance of distinguishing between the triggering factors specific to certain mental health disorders. When used in conjunction with a precise diagnosis, research findings can help maximize the impact of health and wellness programs on employees’ health by focusing efforts and resources that respond to the most urgent problems in the workplace.

A substantial and increasing economic burden

The 2011 report of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, "Making the Case for Investing in Mental Health in Canada", states that 21.4% of the working population (aged from 20 to 64 years) suffers from a mental health disorder or mental illness. The Commission estimates lost productivity due to absenteeism, presenteeism and staff turnover costs Canadian businesses approximately $6.3 billion annually. Over the next 30 years, the Commission conservatively forecasts an overall cost to the Canadian economy of $2.5 trillion.

A new enlightening study

The SALVEO Study conducted by professors Alain Marchand and Pierre Durand of the School of Industrial Relations at the Université de Montréal, working in collaboration with researchers at Concordia University and the Université Laval, identifies some of the triggering factors for major mental health disorders. Research findings help determine in a precise manner the role of individual and organizational factors in the incidence of these disorders.

This comprehensive research – the most important to date in Canada – provided an opportunity for researchers to address a series of factors which potentially lead to the development of psychological distress, depression or burnout. The research will be used to develop new early screening tools for mental health problems in the workplace.
About the SALVEO Study

Funded in part by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé, the SALVEO Study was completed with the support of Standard Life Canada. Standard Life facilitated the selection of participating businesses and organizations through its network of clients and partners. Standard Life employees also participated in the study. Researchers questioned more than 2,100 employees from 63 companies and organizations.

Researchers were interested in validating the assumption that the effects of personal and professional problems cannot be considered separately when evaluating the mental health of individuals. The study addressed a variety of factors, including work organization, family and workplace relations, individual traits, such as self-esteem, and other potential risk factors, such as chronic diseases and alcohol consumption.

Using a questionnaire with nearly 300 questions, the study helped determine and compare some of the factors specific to the incidence of psychological distress, depression or burnout.

The research methodology is significant because survey results from the self-reporting questionnaires were matched with biological indicators, including a measure of cortisol level. Cortisol is a hormone found in saliva and recognized as an indicator of an individual’s level of stress. For the study, samples were taken on two work days and on one rest day, from 401 of the 2,162 participating employees. Five individual samples were taken at regular intervals on these days.

The empirical data collected helped validate the relevance of the questionnaires in the identification of the mental health disorders being examined. This had never been done before in the workplace.

Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is a really fabulous mix that I stumbled upon in Winners. It was in the sale aisle.

Made by "The Pure Pantry" its a quick way to cheat on making "almost" home made. All you do is add butter, egg and vanilla.

Really easy to make.  Not dry but you can tell a slight difference in the consistency. Although they are yummy and I would make them again, in factmI'm heading back to get another pack for our Open House on Sunday!

We like them and give an 8 out of 10.

Welcome Fall 2013

Well September is here.  I cannot believe how fast August went by.  Actually I can't believe how fast the summer went!  I know for many Fall is a favourite time.  For me September holds a very special place in my heart.

On September 4th is the day that we had to say goodbye to my heart and soul, Luke Sidewalker.  He was my very first Boxer and he showed me many things.  He taught me that my heart could open up again and love.  I never knew it was possible to love something  so much before Luke came into our lives.   He is the reason why we started our journey into Boxer Rescue.  It is because of Luke that I have helped many dogs find forever homes.  It is because of him that I volunteered for rescue.

September 9th marks another special day in my life with a much happier note.  It was the day that I married my best friend.  Matt & celebrate our ummm....... 7th year anniversary!  wow.  Crap times flies when your having fun doesn't it??  It's amazing that I am so blessed that I get to spend my life with so much love and share it with so many great amazing people.

Ok so yes its a new month.  I am beyond thrilled because we have had another friend of ours join our Scentsy team.  It's going to be an amazing year ahead as we all work towards our goals.  My goal is to make the incentive trip this year, to Barbados and then Matt & I will be sipping Mai Tai's on the beach!

I am excited for September too because Scentsy has just launched a whole new whack of stuff to help me build my business.  Not only do I have this new amazing website www.vancouverlovescandles.ca  they have launched a Loyalty Program .  This means that you Scentsy & Velata addicts will never risk running out of product!   Scentsy has also launched a new Party Host Portal.  This is an easy and very efficient way for Host's to plan and organize their Scentsy Party!  So who wants to host my first party using the new system??? !   September is my busiest time of the year so make sure to book your party early!

OH MY GOSH! they have so many new products.  A super cool product that they have now is the Element Warmers.  These warmers use a heating plate technology to melt the wax but there is no lightbulb and no light emitted.  This is perfect for people who want a Scentsy warmer in their bedroom to warm their favourite calming, relaxing scent while they sleep; but there is no light - just the calm relaxing scent.

As usual we have the September Warmer of the month.  This month is "Creepy Crawly".  For those of you who attended WBBR's (now RAB - Rescue a Boxer) annual Pub Night Fundraiser, you got a sneak peek of it.  It was one of the baskets I donated to the silent auction.

Combined with the Scent of the Month "Sugar & Spice" it makes everything nice!

Truly exciting times at this company!  And I'm so thrilled that I am going to be a part of it all.

So you want to JOIN us yet?  You want to earn extra cash, free trips and rewards?  How about this pic?  does this help you make your decision? Its very achievable to do!

Because this is where our team is going to be next year.  We will all be laying on the beach enjoying the surf and the sand!

Cheers!!!

Scentsy - A Man's Perspective

Here is Matt's view of Scentsy:

I started off as a loyal, supportive Scentsy Husband. I just wanted to watch my wife live Scentsy and enjoy her “hobby” and help out a little here and there. I hadn’t gone to any parties or events and just wanted be in the background to what she loved doing. Then the first warmer arrived and some scents. I immediately saw some potential in what was happening and being shown. As each new warmer came and each new scent delivered I became more and more hooked on Scentsy. I attended my first Scentsy function at Spring Sprint in 2013 and started to really see what Scentsy was about, but this was just a small sample to the Scentsy Family Reunion in Indianapolis in July 2013. That was the eye opener. I saw lawyers walk away from Law Firms, Mothers who overcome life events that would break most people and the bond of a “family” that I have not seen in most today. I use Family as that what Scentsy has become, you could feel it with the over 8000 people in Lucas Oil stadium during every day of the convention. People were full of joy, companionship and energy it was infectious. We as individuals are always looking in our lives for that true happiness, that joy and fellowship that can elude most forever. I felt that Scentsy was that during that convention. I came back from the family reunion in Indy closer to my wife and closer to a dream. One that was full of happiness. I believe Scentsy is a big part of that and will be a big part of our lives for many many years. I can "Scents" it.

Do You LOVE Your Job?

I cannot tell you how many people I meet everyday that tell me how much they hate their jobs. Yes, I said hate. It's a pretty strong word. But its a word that I hear often.  One time I sat at the side of a bar waiting for a friend to get off work. I heard every single person in this place complain about how they disliked the company they worked for and how they hated their managers. But seriously life is too short to stay in a job that you dislike so much. I've always felt that it's important to find a passion.

I was introduced to Scentsy by a friend who had adopted one of our rescue boxers. She originally signed on to be a Scentsy Consultant because she fell in love with the great products. I thought that it would be an ideal way to earn some extra cash for our rescue. The first three months were amazing. We made some really good money for the rescue and with my earnings I was able to help some dogs that needed medical assistance.

Like most people, both Matt and I want a healthy “work life balance”. We want to be able to spend more time with each other and with our family, instead of working long and intense work hours, travelling for work and being away from home most times. I’m sure our story is no different than yours. We were both busy professionals struggling in an expensive city (Canada's most expensive city to be exact) to get ahead - trying to balance the demands of work, family, and our relationship. Feeling too often unfulfilled and conflicted with the demands of jobs that were more necessities than passions, I wondered if this was all life was? I wondered whether it could get better and how? Knowing that having to work more to increase the material standard of our life would come at a cost – less time with our family, and less time doing the things that bring us happiness. It was a depressing struggle that left us with wanting more.

About 4 months after I signed up for Scentsy, our lives changed. Matt’s client sold their company to a firm overseas and Matt lost his contract. Although it was devastating, and shocking, we took it as a sign to turn things around and to make a huge impact in our lives. We quickly realized that we already had this amazing business, set in place for us. And it was apparent that with Scentsy there is so much opportunity. Scentsy became a second income in a time of need for our family and our Scentsy team became a huge support group for us.

For me, the greatest thing about being a Scentsy Family Consultant is not the extra income, the free trips, the rewards or the incentives; but truly the greatest thing is the people that I have met along my Scentsy journey. From my customers to my Scentsy Family I am blessed to have this great group of people in my life. Some of my customers actually joined my Scentsy Family which made it even better as they have been sharing in the journey with us! I’ve been able to help many people achieve success and meet their goals, while meeting my own goals. It’s been a very rewarding experience for me.  I have a very proud feeling come over me when I watch the girls in my downline receive awards and recognition for their accomplishments.

I’ve never thought myself to be a “salesperson” and to be honest the whole selling in home parties scared the crap out of me. But since I’ve fallen in love with Scentsy I’ve had nothing but fun! I love doing home parties and I have enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people.  I love having my own company! I love working hard for myself and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Selling Scentsy has definitely been rewarding in so many ways that I could not have even imagined. It has filled a gap in my life that was apparently missing. I love my job and wish that I could share it with everyone I meet. I am more fulfilled and happier than I’ve ever been. I want to scream at the top of my lungs to everyone about my discovery!

Scentsy Family Reunion 2013 - Indianapolis

I am back from yet another Scentsy convention. Or as we at Scentsy like to call it "Scentsy Family Reunion". To some of you that title might sound kinda odd. How can a company as large as Scentsy be called a family? Truly to experience this you would know its not odd at all.

My husband Matt came with me this year. And he loved every minute of it. He understood why we refer to it as "Scentsy Family". We truly are so close to our team mates and every person feels a very special connection and bond to one another. Scentsy Spirit is what we call "Generosity" and "Authenticity". Scentsy Spirit is to give more than you take. And the spirit was very much alive.

We get to spend time with our Scentsy team and the team spirit is in such abundance.  We cheer each other on for our successes and support each other in our failures.   There is no better feeling than to watch the two girls that I sponsored walk across the stage, being recognized for their huge achievements in getting their Scentsational Start Level 3. I am so proud of them!

To kick it off we did Scentsy first 5K race.  It was Matt's very first race and  he did awesome!  His time was 27 mins and 30 seconds.  I was so proud to hear this!!!   You see it was a huge achievement for Matt.  He only started running a few months ago and this being his first race was huge!  Matt has lost over 40 pounds since he started to run.

I think that Matt has the race bug and will be participating in many more races.

Me on the other hand appreciated the 5K as a walk in the White River State Park with my Scentsy sister.  It was a great chance for us to catch up with each other and take time out to get to know each other better.  Throughout the year we talk via facebook or email but have only ever had chance to see each other at convention.

Scentsy doesn't do anything in a small way.  This year there was over 8500 consultants.  First stop "Heidi's Birthday Bash".  Heidi is Scentsy's President and married to CEO Orville Thompson.  It was nothing like having a birthday bash at Lucas Oil Stadium and seeing everyone there ready to celebrate.  We got to celebrate with singer Kelly Clarkson.  Let me tell you, if you weren't a fan of her before you definitely are now.  This lady is funny, spunky and so talented.  I never considered myself a fan or even thought hat I would know any of her songs.  But yep, I was singing along to most of the songs.  Kinda funny for a Crue fan I suppose!!

Ok so you know we have a ton of fun at Reunion.  But what is it REALLY about?  I can tell you that it is truly a life changing experience.  These are not my words, but they are the words of many consultants that I spoke to.  It is inspirational listening to the many stories of others, hearing about their struggles through life and how Scentsy made a difference.  A HUGE DIFFERENCE.  I know that personally for me it has made a huge impact.  Not only do I have many new friends that I have met from Scentsy (I call them my Scentsy brothers and sisters) but Reunion has also brought me and my husband closer together.  We bonded so much more (didn't think that was possible) this past week, and I can honestly say that I feel so much closer to him.  He shares the same passion as I do about the Scentsy Family.  We both came away from Reunion feeling inspired and motivated and feeling good about ourselves.  We both have made a pact to work on our Scentsy business and to help as many people along the way that we can.

Sure you say, inspiring and motivated and life changing.  Sounds too cliche to be true.  It really isn't.  Its quite simple actually.  If you doubt what I say, I encourage you to join us next year and experience Scentsy Reunion for yourself.

We listened to amazing speakers like Mary Christensen, Brene Brown and Daniel Pink.  Each of them giving me a different "AH-HA" moment and each with a wealth of knowledge.

Scentsy has always asked consultants to tell them what their "WHY" is.  That is a pretty broad question.  What is your "WHY" that you have a Scentsy business?  I never knew the answer to that.  Well sure, my answer was pretty broad, as the question is pretty general.  My "Why" is so that I don't have to work in a job that I don't like.  That I can work with people that I love and respect.  That I don't have to work with bullies and that I feel like a part of a team. And that I'm included.  That I have my own business and am able to work when I want and be able to spend more time with my family.

This year they asked us what our "Yay" and "Double Yay" would be.  My yay is that Matt came and experienced his first Reunion with me and LOVED it.  My double yay will be when we both walk across that stage next year as Directors.

Next year is Scentsy's 10 Year Anniversary.  Our reunion will be in St. Louis.  I invite you to join us for a life changing event.  They promise it to be the biggest ever.  It's definitely the longest.  It will be a full 6 days of fun, inspiration and motivation.  Plus I hear a rumor that there will be a baseball game in there too!!! :)

Thank you to my Scentsy Family.  We miss you all already!!  I cannot wait to see you next year.  Truly an amazing group of people.  And why not? Scentsy is really a wonderful company!
